(LANSING) – Unemployment rates went up around Southern Michigan from April to May.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says St. Joseph County’s jobless rate increased from 5% to 5.7%, as did Cass County. Branch County went up from 4.5% to 5% while Hillsdale County saw a jump in unemployment from 5.1% to 5.9%.

Data shows that 48 Michigan counties exhibited unemployment rate advances over the month of May, with a median increase of 0.5%.

Wayne Rourke, Labor Market Information Director for the Michigan Center For Data And Analytics, says the State’s regional labor markets were largely impacted by seasonal workforce increases over the month.
