Martin Wins As Republicans Sweep Angola Municipal Election

ANGOLA - Dave Martin will be the new mayor of Angola beginning January 1, 2024.

Republicans conquered all available seats during the 2023 Angola Municipal Election.

Martin defeated Democratic nominee Sue Essman, 75.81 percent to 24.19 percent with 821 votes to Essman's 262 votes.

He will be the first Republican mayor for the city of Angola since 1991 when the late Bill Selman was elected.

Following Selman's passing in 2001 from cancer current Mayor Richard Hickman took office.

Mayor Hickman has service 5.5 consecutive terms as the mayor of Angola, but did not run for reelection.

Republican Randy Coffey won the Angola Common Council District A seat and will be replacing Gary Crum.

Crum did not run for reelection.

Coffey defeated Democratic Nominee Nick Sutton 66.09 percent to 33.91 percent winning 230 votes to Sutton's 118 votes.

And finally the Angola Common Council District D winner is Republican David Roe.

District D is currently held by councilman Dave Martin.

Roe Defeated Democratic nominee Lou Ann Homan 63.49 percent to 36.51 percent garnering 80 votes to Homan's 46 votes.

Jerry McDermid (R) held the Angola Common Council at District At-Large seat and ran unopposed.

Dave Olson remained as Angola Common Councilman for District B (D).

Olson will be the only registered Democrat on the Angola City Common Council.

Jennifer Sharkey (R) ran unopposed for Common Council District C.

Sharkey will be replacing Kathy Armstrong (D) who did not run for reelection.

Ryan Herbert (R) was reelected as Angola City Clerk-Treasurer and also ran unopposed.
